Daredevil: Born Again – A Rough Reboot with Potential

Share:

Disney Plus’ Daredevil: Born Again attempts to recapture the gritty, street-level charm of Netflix’s original Daredevil, but struggles to balance its identity as both a continuation and a fresh start. The series initially follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) as he steps away from his life as Daredevil after a personal loss, only to be drawn back into New York’s underworld.

While Born Again retains the brutal action and emotional depth of its predecessor, Marvel’s mid-production overhaul is evident. The departure of original showrunners Matt Corman and Chris Ord led to shifts in tone and structure, with courtroom drama taking a backseat to immediate action set pieces. The show also sidelines key characters like Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), replacing them with new allies such as Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and retired cop Cherry (Clark Johnson).

The biggest strength of Born Again lies in the chemistry between Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, who returns with a politically charged mayoral campaign. Their tension fuels the show’s strongest moments, reinforcing their complex dynamic. However, the series’ pacing is uneven, with multiple narrative threads making it feel overstuffed at times.

Despite these issues, Born Again finds its footing in its later episodes, hinting at a stronger second season. The show isn’t a seamless revival of the Netflix series, but it lays the groundwork for a promising future in the MCU. The first two episodes are now streaming on Disney Plus.
