HUSSLUP Media Talent App Shuts Down Amid Hollywood Job Crisis.

Share:

HUSSLUP, a job search and networking app for the entertainment industry, is taking an “indefinite hiatus” starting Friday, according to an email from founder and CEO H Schuster. Launched publicly in January after three years in invite-only beta, the app had grown to 15,000 members.

Schuster cited the ongoing challenges in the entertainment industry, including widespread layoffs and reduced opportunities following the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as key reasons for the closure. In a message to users, Schuster expressed heartbreak over the decision, acknowledging the broader struggles faced by professionals in Hollywood.

The entertainment sector continues to grapple with high unemployment, despite a slight recovery in job opportunities. In June, the number of entertainment workers in Los Angeles reached its lowest level in over 30 years, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Art Directors Guild reported earlier this year that 75% of its 3,000 members were unemployed.

Contributing factors to the downturn include significant layoffs at major studios like Amazon, MGM Studios, and Pixar, cost-cutting measures, and the rising adoption of AI tools to streamline production. Schuster noted that the post-“streaming wars” contraction made it difficult for HUSSLUP to generate revenue and attract funding.

The app had raised $2.5 million in 2022, following earlier pre-seed funding, but the company struggled to secure additional capital. HUSSLUP recently unveiled its AI-powered Greenlight Studio to assist screenwriters, but it wasn’t enough to sustain operations.

When the app shuts down, all user data will be deleted. A new Facebook group has been created to help members stay connected. Schuster remains hopeful that HUSSLUP can relaunch when the industry recovers.
