Spotify has officially acknowledged testing a feature that utilizes prompt-based AI to create playlists

Share:

In the fall, Spotify unveiled a novel AI-driven feature allowing users to create playlists through AI technology and prompts. Recently, this “AI playlists” feature entered a testing phase, seeking user feedback and reactions. While confirming the test to TechCrunch, Spotify withheld detailed information about the technology and refrained from committing to a specific launch timeframe.

A TikTok video by user @robdad_ showcased the AI playlists feature, accessible from Spotify’s app “Your Library” tab by tapping the plus (+) button. A pop-up menu revealed the AI playlist option alongside existing choices like “Playlist” and “Blend.” Described as a tool to “Turn your ideas into playlists using AI,” it is currently available only in English.

Upon selecting AI playlists, users are prompted to input their ideas into an AI chatbot-style box or explore suggested prompts. Prompt ideas ranged from “focus at work with instrumental electronica” to “explore a niche genre like Witch House.” The AI chatbot processed the user’s selection, presenting a sample playlist. Users can refine the playlist further by swiping left to remove unwanted songs.

TechCrunch reported references to this AI feature in Spotify’s mobile app in October, prompting speculation. However, Spotify did not confirm its plans at that time, emphasizing its policy of not commenting on speculative features.

Despite growing anticipation, Spotify maintains that the current AI playlists implementation is merely a test. A Spotify spokesperson emphasized the company’s routine testing, indicating that some tests lead to broader experiences, while others serve as valuable learning opportunities. No further details were shared at this time.

While the official launch of AI playlists remains uncertain, Spotify’s commitment to AI integration is evident. The platform introduced an AI DJ feature earlier, offering personalized playlists and commentary in an AI voice modeled after Spotify’s Xavier ‘X’ Jernigan. Spotify’s humming a new tune – the melody of AI. Ziad Sultan, their maestro of personalization, leads the orchestra of language models, generative voices, and custom playlists, aiming to harmonize technology with your musical taste.

Spotify’s AI orchestra is tuning up! Forget just recommendations, CEO Daniel Ek envisions a future where AI summarizes podcasts, crafts personalized ads, and even composes tunes alongside creators.

While AI-powered playlists might still be warming up, Spotify’s already experimenting with AI across the app. Think bite-sized podcast summaries, ads that speak to your taste, and maybe even AI-assisted collaborations for your next musical masterpiece.

Users are encouraged to share their experiences and provide feedback on the feature’s functionality if available.
