Netflix Expands Cloud Gaming with Co-op and Party Games.

Share:

Netflix is set to expand its cloud gaming efforts by introducing couch co-op and party games, streaming them directly to TVs. During the company’s Q4 2024 earnings report, co-CEO Greg Peters emphasized the potential of these games, describing them as a modern take on family board game nights and a new evolution of traditional TV game shows.

Since 2023, Netflix has been testing cloud gaming in beta for a select group of subscribers, and Peters’ announcement confirms the company’s continued investment in the space. However, he did not specify when these co-op and party games would officially launch.

Alongside multiplayer gaming, Netflix remains focused on narrative-driven experiences based on its intellectual properties. Peters highlighted that these games consistently resonate with fans, and the company has an extensive catalog of stories to draw from.

The gaming division has recently undergone significant changes. Leanne Loombe, a key executive, departed for Annapurna Interactive, and leadership within the division shifted after the previous head transitioned to a role focused on generative AI in gaming. Additionally, Netflix announced the removal of nearly all its interactive titles and the closure of its AAA game studio before it had released a single game.

Despite these shifts, Netflix’s push into cloud gaming suggests a long-term strategy to integrate gaming into its streaming ecosystem, offering more interactive experiences for its subscribers.
