How to back up and wipe your Mac

Does your previously fast Mac now seem to be moving slowly? As time passes, the accumulation of files and programs can weigh down your system. However, do not despair! Resetting your Mac back to its factory settings has the potential to revitalize it’s performance and is highly recommended for:

Enhancing Velocity: Removing unnecessary mess enhances performance. Before passing on your Mac, either as a gift or for selling purposes, ensure you erase all personal data.Prior to departure, ensure you have a backup.

To ensure a complete backup, use one (or preferably two) of the following methods before initiating a reset:

  • Apple’s built-in option, iCloud, provides users with the choice of either limited free storage or paid plans for more comprehensive backups.
  • Make a time machine backup by saving it onto an external drive for a personal copy.
  • Cloud-based backups can be obtained through third-party options such as Google Drive and Dropbox.

Make Sure to Verify Your Data Tools

  • Make sure that the applications are reinstallable by verifying their availability for download.
  • Make sure that emails and messages are saved in another location, such as an email server.
  • Ensure that your media libraries are backed up in a secure location.
  • Erase Assistant makes resetting a breeze.

macOS Ventura or newer:

  • Select the Apple Menu and then choose System Settings (or System Preferences) from it.
  • General > Choose Transfer or Reset.
  • Select the option of Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Observe the instructions displayed on the screen and input your Apple ID password when prompted.
  • Erasing all content and settings is irreversible – click the button.

Your Mac will undergo a secure wiping process and subsequently reboot to the initial setup screen, exactly resembling its maiden state. Bid adieu to clutter or sluggishness as you relish in a pristine system once more!
