Murena, the French company known for privacy-focused smartphones, has launched its first tablet—the Murena Pixel Tablet. This device is a customized version of Google’s Pixel Tablet (2023), running /e/OS, a modified Android system that removes Google’s apps and services to enhance user privacy. However, it lacks Google’s charging speaker dock and comes with a $549 price tag.
Announced in December, the Murena Pixel Tablet is now available through Murena’s online store. The pricing is notably higher than Google’s original 128GB Pixel Tablet, which costs $399 standalone or $479 with the speaker dock. Unlike Google’s version, Murena offers only a 128GB storage variant with no color choices but ensures that major corporations won’t track your usage.
A key part of Murena’s privacy approach is removing the Google Play Store. Instead, users can download apps via /e/OS’ App Lounge, which provides free apps anonymously. However, purchasing paid apps still requires a Google account login.
The tablet also ditches Google’s productivity suite, replacing it with privacy-first alternatives for messaging, email, web browsing, maps, calendar, notes, and voice recording. Murena’s Workspace—its answer to Google Docs and Microsoft 365—offers 1GB of free secure cloud storage, with paid plans for 20GB at $2.49/month ($24.90/year) or 128GB at $7.49/month ($74.90/year).
With its emphasis on privacy, the Murena Pixel Tablet caters to users seeking a Google-free Android experience, but its higher cost and app limitations may be trade-offs for those prioritizing convenience.
