The Australian Government has opened a public consultation on the infrastructure needed to support artificial-intelligence training and large data centres.
The process will help shape future advice and Australia’s developing AI standards, with submissions open until 5 pm AEDT on 9 October 2026.
Energy, water and local impacts
The consultation asks how Australia should manage the heavy infrastructure demands associated with large-scale AI computing. Topics include energy use and renewable-energy requirements, sustainable water consumption, project locations, community engagement and impacts on surrounding infrastructure.
It also seeks views on workforce skills and training, along with possible thresholds that would determine which data centres are subject to additional requirements.
Balancing investment and safeguards
The government says Australia’s skilled workforce, research capability and record of attracting digital-infrastructure investment give it an opportunity to compete in the next phase of AI development.
At the same time, large data centres can place pressure on electricity networks, water supplies and local planning systems. The consultation is intended to explore how new investment can proceed while those impacts are managed responsibly.
Responses will be considered alongside targeted stakeholder engagement and work involving Commonwealth, state and territory governments.
