According to Reuters, the filings—submitted through her company TAS Rights Management—include two audio phrases, “Hey, it’s Taylor” and “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift,” along with an image of the star performing onstage.

This move reflects a growing effort among celebrities to defend themselves against AI-generated deepfakes. Swift has previously been targeted by viral nonconsensual AI images and impersonations, including explicit content that spread widely online in 2024. Similar concerns have emerged across platforms like Meta and X, where unauthorised AI content has raised legal and ethical alarms.

Unlike traditional copyright protections, Swift’s filings aim to establish “sound marks,” a lesser-used form of trademark that protects distinctive audio identifiers. Legal experts suggest this could help close a gap where AI-generated voices mimic artists without directly copying existing recordings. Actor Matthew McConaughey has pursued a similar strategy, signalling a broader shift in Hollywood.

The implications extend beyond entertainment. Deepfake content has already intersected with politics, including a manipulated post by Donald Trump falsely linking Swift to his campaign. Meanwhile, global investigations into AI-generated abuse content continue, highlighting the scale of the issue.

As AI tools make digital impersonation easier and more widespread, high-profile figures like Swift are effectively setting new legal boundaries.
