Australia’s 2025–26 federal budget position is expected to finish about $6 billion better than forecast, according to an announcement flagged by Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher.
The Final Budget Outcome is expected to report a deficit roughly $6 billion smaller than the $28.3 billion deficit forecast in the May budget. The final document records actual revenue and spending for the completed financial year, rather than another projection.
Why the update matters
A smaller-than-expected deficit gives the government a stronger starting position as it manages pressure from health, aged care, defence and cost-of-living programs. However, it does not mean the budget has returned to surplus, and the underlying detail will determine whether the improvement is sustainable.
The timing is also significant. The Reserve Bank of Australia is due to announce its next interest-rate decision, with financial markets and economists closely watching inflation and the effect of higher borrowing costs on households and businesses.
What to watch
The final outcome should clarify whether the improvement came from stronger receipts, lower payments, or a combination of both. Businesses will be watching the figures for signs of future tax, spending and regulatory priorities.
The Department of Finance explains that the Final Budget Outcome is the government’s final report of fiscal results for the preceding financial year and must be released within three months of year-end.
