David Jones has entered voluntary administration and receivership, but its physical stores and online business are continuing to trade while its future is assessed. The immediate questions for shoppers are whether they can use gift cards, collect purchases and receive outstanding orders. For employees, the priorities are job security and entitlements.
The appointments were announced on Thursday, 5 November. Ragtrader’s report of the announcement identifies McGrathNicol as voluntary administrators and FTI Consulting as receivers and managers. A process to seek a buyer or new investment is to begin immediately.

What is confirmed, and what remains uncertain?
The announcement is serious, but it does not mean every store has closed or every order has been cancelled. Here is the position at the time of this update.
| Issue | Position at publication | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stores | Trading continues under receivers. A final closure list has not been verified. | Check your location before travelling. |
| Jobs | The restructuring creates uncertainty. Final job-loss numbers have not been verified. | Follow written employer updates and retain employment records. |
| Gift cards | NEXTNEWS has not verified a post-appointment redemption policy. | Confirm acceptance and any conditions before shopping. |
| Online orders | The website continues trading; individual order fulfilment still needs checking. | Save your confirmation, payment record and tracking details. |
| Returns | The purchase date, reason for return and current arrangements matter. | Ask about your specific transaction and keep proof of purchase. |

Are David Jones stores closing?
Stores remain open for now, according to the appointment announcement. That is a statement about current trading, not a promise that every location will survive a restructure.
ABC News reports that David Jones has 38 sites and that its physical and online stores will trade under the receivers while operations are reviewed. It also reports the retail workers’ union, the SDA, is seeking to preserve jobs and protect affected employees’ entitlements.
Media reports and industry predictions about vulnerable stores should not be treated as an official closure schedule. Check the David Jones store locator, then confirm collection arrangements directly with the store if you already have an order waiting.
What does voluntary administration mean?
Voluntary administration is a process for deciding a company’s future. Possible outcomes include a restructuring agreement with creditors, a return to directors’ control or liquidation. It is not automatically a decision to shut the business permanently.
Receivership is a separate process that can operate alongside administration. In this case, FTI Consulting’s receivers are overseeing trading, while McGrathNicol is managing the proposed sale or recapitalisation process, according to the appointment reporting.
ASIC explains the administration process and creditors’ options. A buyer or fresh investment is an objective of the process, not a confirmed outcome.
Can I still use a David Jones gift card?
Check the current redemption rules before relying on your balance. At publication, NEXTNEWS had not verified an administration-specific policy confirming whether all existing gift cards and store credits would be honoured, or on what conditions.
The retailer’s standard gift-card FAQ describes redemption in Australian stores and online. However, an ordinary FAQ should not be mistaken for a fresh guarantee issued after the appointments.
The ACCC says administrators may honour gift cards or impose conditions. Customers with unused balances generally become unsecured creditors and could recover only part of their money, or none.
Before the appointment, Consumer Policy Research Centre chief executive Erin Turner told the ABC that existing cardholders should use their cards promptly and avoid buying new cards during the uncertainty. After the appointment, first establish whether redemption is available.
- Check and save your balance, purchase receipt and any expiry information.
- Ask whether the card is accepted for your intended item and whether an additional payment is required.
- Keep the receipt showing what was redeemed and the remaining balance.
- If redemption is refused, request the current customer notice and instructions for registering a claim.
No matched-spend rule is being reported here as a confirmed David Jones policy. General examples from other administrations do not establish what applies at David Jones.
What happens to online orders and Click & Collect?
Continuing to trade is encouraging, but it does not verify the status of a particular purchase. Separate an order that has been placed from one that has been dispatched, delivered or confirmed ready for collection.
Consumer Affairs Victoria explains that prepaid goods may still be supplied during administration, although customers can face losses if they are not.
- Save your evidence: order number, receipt, payment method, promised delivery date and tracking messages.
- Check the order: use your account and the retailer’s online-order enquiries page. Ask whether the item has actually been dispatched.
- For Click & Collect: wait for a collection confirmation and check store hours before travelling.
- If supply fails: ask for a written explanation and the process for a refund or creditor claim. If you paid by card, promptly ask your card provider whether a chargeback is available.
Chargebacks have eligibility rules and time limits. They are not guaranteed, and the administration announcement alone does not prove that an order will go unfulfilled. Describe the actual transaction and problem to your provider.
Can I get a refund or return faulty goods?
A change-of-mind return and a faulty-product claim are different. Ask which current arrangements apply to your purchase, including whether it was made before or after the appointment.
The ACCC says a business continuing to trade under administration should provide solutions in line with consumer guarantees. If the manufacturer is a separate business, contacting it may also help. A later buyer may not assume every liability from earlier purchases.
Keep photographs of the fault, receipts and correspondence. Do not assume that receiving a store credit is equivalent to receiving cash: confirm whether and how that credit can be redeemed.
What happens to jobs, wages and entitlements?
The announcement does not itself confirm that every employee has lost their job. Staff should obtain written advice about their role, roster, pay and any proposed redundancy from the business or appointed practitioners.
ASIC’s employee receivership guidance explains that some employee claims have priority over other creditors. Priority is not a guarantee that every amount will be paid immediately or in full.
Employees should retain payslips, contracts or enterprise-agreement details, leave balances and superannuation records. If an entitlement calculation appears wrong, raise it promptly and provide supporting documents. Staff employed by a concession brand should check the employer named on their payslip.
The Fair Entitlements Guarantee is not automatically triggered by voluntary administration. Under the ordinary FEG eligibility rules, employment must have ended and the employer must be in liquidation or bankruptcy, with other conditions applying. Eligible claims can cover certain wages, leave, notice and redundancy entitlements, subject to limits. FEG does not cover unpaid superannuation.
The Fair Work Ombudsman can provide advice and support on unpaid entitlements while a business is in voluntary administration. Employees can also seek help from their union.
What should shoppers watch for next?
The most useful updates will be specific: an official store list, a gift-card and returns notice, instructions for unfulfilled orders, and details of any sale or restructuring agreement. Until those are available, keep records and confirm the rules for your own transaction.
For gifts needed by a particular date, consider whether you can take possession immediately rather than prepaying for later delivery. That reduces delivery exposure, although it does not remove all refund or warranty risks.
