Apple will reportedly reward artists for offering music in spatial audio

Share:

Apple is set to reward artists and record labels who embrace spatial audio, an immersive audio format, by offering them extra benefits starting next year. This move is seen as an effort to encourage a broader adoption of spatial audio on Apple Music, aligning with the compatibility of Apple’s various hardware, including AirPods, HomePod, iPhone, and the upcoming Vision Pro headset. The goal is to make spatial audio a prominent feature across the platform. Notably, artists won’t need users to stream their music in spatial audio for the rewards; simply having the music available in this format will be sufficient.

Spatial audio, introduced to Apple Music in 2021 and powered by Dolby Atmos technology, enhances the listening experience. Apple has been incorporating spatial audio into its original content on Apple TV+ as well. The company is also encouraging artists, including independent and smaller acts, to mix their older music in spatial audio. This effort aims to make the adoption process more accessible, as Bloomberg suggests that the cost of mixing in this format is not exorbitant.

While competitors like Amazon Music and Tidal also offer spatial audio, Spotify, Apple’s major rival in music streaming, has not yet adopted this feature. Rumors about Spotify introducing a high-quality music format have circulated for years, but the platform has not made a move in this direction so far.
