Jetstar Carry-On Rules Change in February 2027: New Bag Sizes, Fees and Exceptions

Share:

Jetstar Airways is changing its cabin baggage system for flights departing from 2 February 2027. A standard Jetstar Airways (JQ) Economy booking will include one underseat bag measuring no more than 40 × 30 × 20 cm. A second, larger overhead bag measuring up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm requires Priority Carry-on or an eligible fare bundle. The rules use a size-first allowance rather than the previous overall 7 kg Economy cabin weight allowance.

Updated 20 October 2026 for Australian travellers. These are future rules for Jetstar Airways-operated JQ services, not an immediate change to all flights today. Specific booking and operating-airline exceptions apply.

The new cabin baggage rules at a glance

JQ departure What Economy passengers can bring What to watch
Before 2 February 2027 Existing cabin luggage rules based on 7 kg or eligible 14 kg combined allowance and item restrictions. Check the allowance printed on your booking.
From 2 February 2027, underseat-only fare One underseat bag, up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm. Do not assume a separate cabin wheelie is included.
From 2 February 2027, Priority Carry-on One underseat bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm plus one overhead bag up to 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Subject to availability; bundled in some fares or sold as an upgrade.
From 2 February 2027, Business Class One underseat bag and one overhead bag, using the same stated dimensions. Applicable on eligible Business Class flights.

Important weight detail: Jetstar says there will no longer be a combined 7 kg cabin allowance under the new JQ options, but each single bag still must not weigh more than 10 kg. “No 7 kg limit” does not mean unlimited baggage weight.

How big is a 40 × 30 × 20 cm underseat bag?

That is a compact daypack, laptop bag, handbag or similarly sized personal item. Measure your bag at its fullest point including handles, feet and bulging external pockets. Do not assume that a small wheelie suitcase will fit merely because it is marketed as “cabin size”. Its length may exceed 40 cm even if it is lightweight.

The overhead limit, 56 × 36 × 23 cm, can accommodate some carry-on wheelie bags and larger backpacks, but passengers need the relevant allowance. A bag marketed as universally cabin-compliant may still be too tall, thick or wide for Jetstar’s published dimensions.

Does Priority Carry-on cost extra?

It may. Jetstar says Priority Carry-on can be purchased as an add-on, subject to availability, or comes with certain Economy bundles. Charges can differ by itinerary and booking date. A previously published Jetstar example indicated charges starting around A$25 for selected domestic one-way flights; that is not a guaranteed current price and should not be used as a quote for an individual flight.

Compare the total checkout cost of a base fare plus Priority Carry-on against eligible bundles and checked baggage. If the upgrade is sold out or your bag is oversized, airport check-in and extra charges may be required. Book only after reviewing the final total.

What if you booked before Jetstar announced the change?

Jetstar has specific transitional protections for people who booked before 5 August 2026 for a Jetstar Airways flight departing on or after 2 February 2027. Under its published rules, those eligible travellers will receive the new Priority Carry-on option at no extra cost. Jetstar also says it will refund the earlier +7 kg purchased carry-on addition for affected bookings.

That concession does not apply to group bookings. Jetstar says it will issue updated itineraries; travellers should verify their own entitlement using the airline’s Manage booking tools. Customers with later bookings must follow the allowance for their fare and any purchased extras.

What happens if you fly before 2 February and return afterwards?

You may be subject to different baggage conditions on each leg. For example, a January outbound JQ flight can retain the earlier combined 7 kg or eligible 14 kg arrangement, while a February return flight can follow the new size-based one- or two-item allowance. For multi-leg journeys, check each operating airline separately and consider packing to meet the most restrictive leg.

Passengers connecting between Jetstar Airways (JQ) and Jetstar Japan (GK) should also check each segment: Jetstar Japan continues to use its separate weight-based rules.

How does Jetstar compare with Qantas and Virgin Australia?

Do not assume the three airlines share a universal cabin luggage allowance. Qantas and Virgin Australia’s included cabin bags and weight limits depend on airline, cabin, aircraft type and sometimes ticket conditions. Before choosing a fare, compare all cabin-item dimensions, total weight, included checked baggage, checked-bag fees, airport fee rules and flexibility.

For exact current terms, consult Qantas carry-on baggage and Virgin Australia carry-on baggage as well as Jetstar. This guide does not assume Qantas or Virgin have announced the same February 2027 rule.

Five ways to avoid surprises at the airport

  1. Check the airline code and departure date for every flight, especially a trip crossing 2 February 2027.
  2. Measure the actual packed bag: 40 × 30 × 20 cm underseat; 56 × 36 × 23 cm overhead with eligibility.
  3. Look for Priority Carry-on on the itinerary: do not assume it is included just because a booking includes carry-on luggage.
  4. Compare the total fare: add upgrade costs or checked baggage before deciding which ticket is cheaper.
  5. Respect the 10 kg per-item maximum: the removal of the combined 7 kg limit is not a removal of all safety weight limits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a handbag and a laptop bag for free?

For the new underseat-only JQ Economy allowance, the standard inclusion is one item. You would normally need to combine the handbag and laptop into one compliant underseat bag unless another specific allowance applies.

Can I buy overhead baggage at the airport?

Jetstar says an upgrade can be offered at the boarding gate subject to availability, but Priority Carry-on may sell out. If an extra bag cannot be accepted, it may need to be checked with additional charges.

What about children, medicines and mobility aids?

Jetstar publishes separate conditions for infants, medical and assistive items; some do not count towards standard cabin baggage limits. Always verify the latest product-specific rules before departure.
