Rhode Island’s Public Benefits System Offline After Cyberattack

Share:

Rhode Island has taken its RIBridges system offline following a cyberattack that may have exposed the personal data of hundreds of thousands of users. The system, which facilitates applications for public assistance programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and access to the state’s healthcare marketplace, HealthSource RI, was shut down on Friday, according to CBS affiliate WPRI 12.

Governor Dan McKee announced that the breach may have compromised sensitive information, including names, addresses, and social security numbers of individuals who used the system between 2019 and now. State Chief Digital Officer and Chief Information Officer Brian Tardiff clarified during a press briefing that the attack was not ransomware but a form of extortion carried out by a cybercriminal group.

With RIBridges offline, residents cannot use its web portal or mobile app to apply for benefits. The state has provided mail-in paper applications and detailed instructions on the Department of Human Services website to ensure continuity of access to assistance.

The cyberattack also disrupted HealthSource RI, the state’s healthcare marketplace. Officials aim to restore the system before the healthcare open enrollment deadline on January 31, 2024.

A dedicated call center will be available to assist those affected by the breach. Beginning Sunday, the call center will operate from 11 AM to 8 PM ET, and from Monday onward, hours will extend to 9 AM to 9 PM ET. Impacted individuals will also receive instructions by mail for free credit monitoring.

The state continues to investigate the attack and is committed to enhancing its cybersecurity measures to prevent future incidents. Regular updates on the situation and assistance options are available on a dedicated breach update website.
