Melbourne’s airport rail project has taken another step forward, with the federal and Victorian governments announcing a 2031 target for a new Keilor East station.
Reporting on 30 September 2026 says the second stage involves a 7.4-kilometre line from Albion towards the airport precinct, via Keilor East. Early investigations and procurement are expected in coming weeks, while major construction is planned to begin in 2028.
The route would connect to the Metro Tunnel and include a 500-metre bridge over the Maribyrnong River. It would be delivered alongside the Sunshine station upgrade forming the project’s first stage.
For travellers, the important distinction is that the Keilor East target is not a completion date for a direct train to the airport terminals. The final connection between Keilor East and the airport still has no finalised delivery timeline.
Visitors should continue to plan journeys using existing airport transport options. This announcement concerns future infrastructure, rather than a service that passengers can book or use today.
