White sand, warm water and a place to switch off: the Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka all make a persuasive case for your next beach holiday. But choosing between them takes more than comparing photographs.

A beach that looks perfect in February can offer a very different experience in July. Even within one country, opposite coasts may have different rainy seasons.

Our editorial shortlist compares eight beaches by scenery, holiday style and the months worth targeting. These are seasonal planning windows, not forecasts or guarantees of safe swimming.

Eight beaches and when to visit

Beach Country Months to target Why consider it
White Beach in Boracay Philippines December to April White sand and a lively beach holiday
Nacpan Beach near El Nido Philippines December to April A long shoreline alongside a Palawan adventure
Kata Beach in Phuket Thailand December to March A convenient base for a family beach break
Railay West in Krabi Thailand December to March Limestone scenery and a sense of escape
Lamai Beach on Koh Samui Thailand February to April Beach time with restaurants and accommodation nearby
Mirissa Beach Sri Lanka December to March A southern beach stop on a wider island trip
Nilaveli Beach Sri Lanka May to September An east-coast break near Trincomalee
Pasikudah Beach Sri Lanka May to September A relaxed east-coast resort stay

The windows above are our planning recommendations drawn from regional seasonality. November and April can extend the Andaman and Sri Lankan south-coast seasons, but transition weather deserves extra attention. The Philippines for white sand and island scenery

White Beach in Boracay — our pick for a classic beach holiday

Boracay’s White Beach combines the appeal of pale sand with a well-established holiday scene. It suits travellers who want the beach itself to be the centre of the trip, with activity and places to eat close at hand.

Choose it if your ideal day involves time on the sand followed by a lively evening. If solitude is your priority, look carefully at the accommodation’s immediate surroundings rather than assuming every part of a famous beach feels the same.

When to go: December to April is a useful target for a conventional beach break. Peak periods bring competition for rooms, so compare the full cost before committing. Beach overview.

Nacpan Beach near El Nido — our pick for a beach and adventure combination

Nacpan offers a long stretch of sand on mainland Palawan, while the wider El Nido region adds limestone islands, lagoons and boat excursions. This is an appealing option for travellers who want to alternate unhurried beach days with exploring.

The distinction matters: staying near Nacpan and staying in El Nido town are different choices. Check the location against the activities you actually want to do.

When to go: December to April is the principal dry-season window. May and November are transitional alternatives. June to October brings a greater risk of rough-weather disruption to boat trips, so keep flexibility in an itinerary built around the water. El Nido visitor guide.

Thailand for a choice of beach holiday styles

Kata Beach in Phuket — our pick for a straightforward family base

The Tourism Authority of Thailand identifies Kata among Phuket’s more family-oriented beaches. It is worth considering if you want a beach base within an established resort destination rather than planning a trip around remote islands.

When to go: We would target December to March for a beach-focused stay. Phuket faces the Andaman Sea, where the southwest monsoon can bring stormier conditions during much of April to October. Surf conditions and swimming conditions are different considerations. Thailand beaches guide.

Railay West in Krabi — our pick for dramatic scenery

Railay’s limestone cliffs give this peninsula a distinct identity. It is a strong contender for travellers who want their beach holiday to include memorable landscapes rather than just a hotel beside the sand.

The peninsula’s boat access is part of its appeal, but also something to consider when travelling with substantial luggage or limited mobility.

When to go: December to March is our preferred planning window, following the Andaman coast’s seasonal pattern. Allow room for changes to boat arrangements when conditions deteriorate. Thai government Railay guide.

Lamai Beach on Koh Samui — our pick for beach time with nearby amenities

Lamai offers accommodation, restaurants and entertainment along Koh Samui’s eastern coast. It is a useful alternative to an Andaman itinerary, especially for travellers who prefer to settle into one island base.

When to go: February to April is a sensible target. Crucially, Samui does not follow Phuket’s rainfall calendar: the Gulf coast generally receives its heaviest rain between September and December. Do not use a Phuket forecast to judge a Samui booking. Lamai visitor information and TAT weather guidance.

Sri Lanka for a beach holiday with more to explore

Mirissa Beach — our pick for a southern coastal stop

Mirissa belongs on the shortlist for travellers who want beach time as part of a wider Sri Lankan journey. Our suggestion is to give it several nights rather than treating it as a brief photo stop between other destinations.

When to go: December to March is a practical core window. The south and southwest generally have their more favourable beach season during the northern winter, although conditions vary from day to day.

Nilaveli Beach — our pick for an east-coast base

Near Trincomalee, Nilaveli gives travellers a different seasonal option from the south coast. For Australians planning a midyear escape, that is an important advantage.

When to go: May to September is the main planning window. Choose the east coast deliberately rather than adding it to a tightly packed southern itinerary.

Pasikudah Beach — our pick for a slower resort stay

Pasikudah, also written Pasikuda, is another east-coast option, near Batticaloa. We would shortlist it for travellers who want to unpack and spend several days in one coastal setting.

When to go: May to September is a useful target. Sri Lanka’s October–November inter-monsoon period can bring widespread showers and rough seas, so it deserves more caution for a short trip focused entirely on the beach.

Which destination would we choose?

Our verdict depends on the holiday you want:

  • For a classic white-sand escape: start with Boracay.
  • For beaches plus island exploration: consider Nacpan and the wider El Nido region.
  • For striking coastal scenery: put Railay high on the list.
  • For an established beach base: compare Kata and Lamai, checking their different seasons.
  • For beach time within a broader Sri Lankan journey: consider Mirissa in the southern season.
  • For a May–September beach break: give Nilaveli and Pasikudah serious consideration.

These are editorial recommendations, not an objective ranking. A couple seeking quiet, a family with young children and a group looking for nightlife may reasonably choose three different winners.

Compare the whole holiday before booking

Look beyond the nightly room price. Add airport transfers, any domestic flights or boats, meals and the excursions you would actually take. A cheaper room can offer poor value if reaching it uses a large share of a short holiday.

Check whether “beachfront” means a usable swimming beach and how far the hotel is from the restaurants or activities you want. Sea conditions, tides and local warning flags matter more than a seasonal table on the day you visit.

For trips planned during October, avoid assuming all three countries are entering their best beach weather together. Compare the individual coast, flexible booking terms and the current local forecast.

Your turn to choose

Which would you choose — the Philippines, Thailand or Sri Lanka?

Would you take Boracay’s white sand, Railay’s limestone scenery or a Sri Lankan beach escape? Or have we missed a beach that deserves a place on the list?
