Sri Lanka has been ranked among the world’s 10 fastest-improving tourism economies in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026.
The country’s index score increased by 4.3% from the previous edition, placing it tenth among the strongest improvers. Seven of the top 10 improving economies were in the Asia-Pacific region, underlining the region’s accelerating tourism recovery and investment.
The index evaluates factors that support sustainable travel and tourism, including infrastructure, enabling conditions, demand drivers and long-term resilience. Sri Lanka continues to benefit from strong natural and cultural assets, relative affordability and renewed international visitor interest.
The result is encouraging, but the index also highlights the importance of reliable transport, service quality, environmental protection and consistent policy if tourism growth is to remain competitive and sustainable.
