Sri Lanka recorded 1,678,745 international tourist arrivals between 1 January and 27 September 2026, according to the latest weekly figures from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
The total includes 143,623 visitors during the first 27 days of September. India remained the largest source market for the month, contributing 45,679 arrivals, or about 32 per cent of the September total.
Asia and long-haul markets support demand
China and Australia each accounted for roughly 7 per cent of September arrivals, with 10,081 and 10,067 visitors respectively. The United Kingdom was close behind at 9,967, followed by Germany, Japan and France.
Across the year to 27 September, India contributed 431,162 visitors. The United Kingdom supplied 159,956, while China reached 110,909. Germany and Australia were also among Sri Lanka’s strongest international markets.
Monthly performance has varied
January and February were the strongest months so far, with 277,327 and 279,328 arrivals respectively. July and August also performed well, recording 196,845 and 191,704 visitors. The changing monthly pattern reflects seasonal travel demand across Europe, Asia and Australia.
The figures reinforce Sri Lanka’s position as an increasingly important Indian Ocean destination. The country offers beaches, wildlife, cultural heritage, hill-country landscapes and a growing range of hotels and smaller accommodation options.
What travellers should check
Visitors should verify visa and entry requirements through official Sri Lankan channels before departure. Weather conditions, rail and road schedules, attraction access and hotel availability can change, especially during peak travel periods or severe weather.
Travellers should also confirm that their insurance covers planned activities and allow extra time for transport between regions. Tourism data is preliminary and may be revised by the responsible authority.
