OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade aimed at coding, computer use and professional work, as part of its 29 September 2026 announcements.
The company says the model approaches GPT-6 Astra on several of its evaluations while charging one-fifth of Astra’s standard API input and output token prices. Those comparisons come from OpenAI’s testing; NextNews has not independently benchmarked the model.
Standard API pricing is US$2 per million input tokens, US$0.10 per million cached input tokens and US$10 per million output tokens. These are usage-based API charges, distinct from ChatGPT subscription fees.
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is available through its API and to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Its announcement says availability does not yet extend to Chat.
For businesses, the immediate question is whether the model meets their task requirements at an acceptable cost. Benchmark results alone do not establish accuracy for every workflow.
