Google has opened preorders for Googlebook, a new premium-laptop category built on Android technology with desktop foundations drawn from ChromeOS.
The first five models are being produced by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Prices start at US$899, with configurations offering Intel or Qualcomm processors, neural-processing units rated above 45 TOPS, touchscreens up to 2.8K OLED resolution and claimed battery life of up to 14 hours.
Googlebook is designed to work closely with Android phones. Features include access to phone files, app streaming in desktop windows and the ability to continue supported tasks started on another device. Google says transferred settings, saved passwords, messages and Wi-Fi information are protected with end-to-end encryption.
Built-in Gemini functions include Magic Pointer, which lets users call AI assistance for selected on-screen content. Google says Gemini only acts when requested and can be disabled.
Retail availability begins on 4 October in the United States and 5 October in selected international markets. Purchases include 12 months of Google AI Pro and additional software benefits, although availability may vary by market.
