Spotify is rolling out a new feature aimed at helping users distinguish between human musicians and AI-generated profiles. Announced on April 30, the “Verified by Spotify” badge will appear as a light green check mark next to artist names, signalling authenticity.
The verification system relies on automated analysis, including an artist’s engagement history, listener activity, and compliance with platform policies. It also considers external indicators such as live performances, merchandise, and linked social media accounts. In addition to automation, Spotify will involve human reviewers to assess profiles that demonstrate credible behaviour, starting with the platform’s most searched artists.
This move comes amid growing concerns over the rise of AI-generated music and synthetic artist profiles. Users have increasingly reported algorithmic recommendations pushing AI-created tracks into playlists, along with cases where AI music was allegedly uploaded under deceased artists’ profiles. The new badge aims to provide transparency and address calls for clearer labelling.
Spotify emphasised that while it does not penalise artists who responsibly use AI tools, it actively removes impersonators, content farms, and accounts attempting to manipulate the system. The company also plans to expand artist profiles with more detailed information—similar to “nutrition labels”—to give listeners better insight into an artist’s background and credibility.
The “Verified by Spotify” badge will roll out gradually over the coming weeks, marking another step in the platform’s effort to balance innovation in AI-generated music with authenticity and trust for listeners.
