Fortnite is coming back to iOS in Europe

Share:

After initially being removed from the iOS App Store earlier this week, Fortnite creator Epic Games has now been granted permission to publish apps on the European version of the store. The decision marks a turnaround in relations between Apple and game developer following a brief impasse over Fortnite’s status.

Europe’s recently implemented Digital Markets Act (DMA) has prompted the reinstatement. The DMA mandates that major technology companies, such as Apple, relax restrictions on app distribution to enable alternative app stores to thrive on iOS devices for the very first time.

Initially, Epic had intentions of introducing Fortnite and their proprietary Epic Games Store to Europe through DMA. Nonetheless, not long after that announcement was made public, Apple put an end to Epic’s developer account causing quite a stir. Several individuals viewed this action as vengeance for the outspoken remarks by Tim Sweeney – CEO of Epic – against Apple regarding its penalty charge amounting to €1.84 billion due anti-trust offenses.

It was fortunate that the European Commission stepped in and urged Apple to restore Epic Sweden AB, which is Epic’s developer account. According to a statement from Apple, they explained that Epic has consented to adhere with DMA regulations.

Epic considers it a major triumph, emphasizing the European Commission’s prompt implementation of DMA regulations and its ability to hold tech giants responsible. With their developer account reinstated, Epic affirms that they will proceed with releasing the Epic Games Store and reintroducing Fortnite to iOS in Europe.

The European mobile gaming scene may undergo a significant transformation if this move takes place. The introduction of another app store, such as Epic’s, could result in decreased developer fees and more options for iPhone and iPad users throughout Europe.
