Instagram is now accessible in Turkey once again after a nine-day prohibition, as the country has overturned its decision to block it. The reversal was achieved through negotiations between Turkish officials and Meta, the parent corporation of Instagram.
The prohibition was raised by Abdulkadir Uraloglu, the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure on Saturday night. He mentioned that Instagram had committed to satisfying governmental requirements with regards to “catalog crimes” and censorship of content; however, it’s still uncertain what these specific requests entailed.
Initially, the ban which was enforced on August 2 stirred up controversy following allegations that Instagram suppressed messages of sympathy relating to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination. Subsequently, the government pointed out wider concerns about content on the platform as grounds for prohibiting access.

The improvement is credited to dealings between authorities and Meta. Despite the Turkish government’s assertion that it has resolved its Instagram-related problems, apprehensions persist regarding how banning and subsequent talks could impede freedom of speech and online censorship.
